Curriculum

From fighting basics to self-improvement, Red Tiger Martial Arts takes students through beginner basic skills and techniques through to more advanced martial arts concepts spanning various skill sets. Our martial focus is two-fold: Effectiveness - what works in reality-based situations and Maximum Efficiency (Wing Chun Skill Set) - having the most impact using the least amount of energy. For day-to-day life, applying the strategies that you learn to use in a physical combat setting will have a positive effect on your relationships, work/life balance and overall well-being.

  • Striking Skills - using fists, open palm, elbows.
    Kicking Skills - using the foot or shin, high or low.
    Joint Controls - targeting fingers, wrists, shoulders.
    Throws & Sweeps - using the foot, thigh, hip and shoulder.
    Submission Holds - standup and on the ground.
    Wing Chun Skills - striking, trapping, locking, redirecting, intercepting, simultaneous offense and defense

  • Qigong (breathwork) Exercises - Ex. Ba Duan Jin, Shibashi
    Shaolin Kung Fu Forms - Ex. Wu Bu Quan
    Traditional Kung Fu Forms - Ex. Fa Kuen
    Wing Chun Forms - Ex. Siu Nim Tau, Chum Kiu
    Meditation - Controlling your thoughts, feelings and actions in order overcome challenges and resolve conflicts successfully.

  • Classes will typically include a workout routine such as body weight calisthenics, mobility exercises, or even HIIT workouts, possibly using dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, cones, etc. to keep the body in fighting shape.

  • On select nights, we cover self-improvement relating martial concepts to internal and interpersonal conflict resolution, based on Shaolin philosophy and Zen philosophy.

Class Format

Get an idea of what to expect from a typical class at Red Tiger Martial Arts. Though certain topics and activities may vary from class to class, this list represents the general class structure. We follow the basic Shaolin Kung Fu methodology - We offer exercises to condition the body and philosophy that
nourishes the mind; forms and drills to increase body intelligence (body karma); and the opportunity to test your skill in a challenging yet safe and fun environment.

  • Beginner basics of Chinese “qigong” or breathwork - focused on using the breath and controlled movements to cultivate energy and spread energy throughout the body.

  • Physical conditioning tailored to the evening’s skill training. Examples include: calisthenics, kettlebell routines, HIIT workouts, and bodyweight routines to help maximize mobility and efficiency of motion.

  • Traditional Chinese forms
    Mitt work
    Partner drills
    Line drills
    Self defense

  • On select nights, we practice sparring or sparring drills to give the students experience with kicking, striking, and takedown skills with a partner.

*Note about our COVID protocol for classes:

Vaccinations and boosters are still strongly recommended along with the flu shot for all students.
Masking is no longer required for any students. Hand washing and sanitizing along with general personal hygiene is still encouraged.
In order to be respectful and kind to your kung fu family, please do not come to class if you or anyone in your
household or immediate circle has flu-like symptoms.
